Orford Country Market

It was good to see so many of our regular customers back at the market last weekend although we are still missing a few of our producers who are still recovering from the demands of producing for Christmas and New Year.

This week we hope to have a good range of produce on the food tables including:

Freshly dug, cut or picked vegetables from David in Sudbourne.

Freshly baked sweet and savouries including scones, meringues, marbled cookies, lemon drizzle buns, cakes, sponges, buns and fruit tarts and pies.

Preserves.

On the craft tables:

Cushions and Lavender Bags plus a wide range of wool and woollens to help keep out the cold and damp.

Jewellery, cards, local photos and art with a range of Images of Suffolk cards with some new mounted prints of the same range ready for framing

This week there may be a few plants and we might see the first of the spring bulbs but a little later on, there will be a succession of bulbs, perennials and then annuals.

On the craft tables lots of wool and warm knitted woollies to keep out the cold snap that must be just around the corner, cushions and lavender bags.

This week the market is on Friday 23rd December and we will have:

On the food tables:

A range of pork products raised at The Crown, Snape.

Fab potatoes for the best of Christmas roasties. Choose between Saxon,Stemster or Desiree.

Small variety carrots for scrubbing and eating whole. Pulled fresh from the ground on Thursday.

Juicy onions for the perfect gravy and bread sauce.

Sprouts, on or off the stalk.

Young parsnips, small and packed with flavour for roasting whole.

Honey truffles, honey and sea-salt caramels and a special batch of truffles made with honey and home-grown plums which have been soaked in brandy for 18 months and then pureed. Due to high demand there are only a few boxes left of each - so shop early to avoid disappointment!

Cheese scones, sundried tomato turnovers, bakewell tarts and mini muffins.

Cheese straws, Cheesey bites, suffolk rusks and mince pies.

On the Craft tables we will have:

Jewellery, Cards and Photos, Paintings and Etchings.

Finally we would like to wish everyone a Happy and Peaceful Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

Just one more week until Christmas but two more Orford Country Markets where you will find locally produced food for your festive celebrations and lots of crafts which make ideal Christmas presents.

Remember that fresh food and vegetables can be ordered this weekend (17th) for collection at the market on FRIDAY 23rd. There will be no market on Saturday 24th and the first market in 2012 will be Saturday 14th.

On the food tables this weekend we have:

Sorry but have just had the butcher on the phone, he can't get the meat back to me before Saturday even if I go and pick it up so I will not be able to bring anything this weekend. Mum will take orders from people for next week. A pig escaped from the slaughter house and trading standards shut it down for a day to investigate and they still haven't found it! IT'S NOT ONE OF MINE regards Teresa

On FRIDAY 23rd there will be streaky and back bacon and gammon joints which can be ordered this weekend (17th).
Locally grown fresh vegetables subject to prevailing weather conditions but hopefully new season Parsnips for the Christmas weekend.

Hello,

We are in the beautiful church of St.Bartholmew's this week, so come in and take a look at this wonderful historical building. We are always left with great comments from you when we are in the church.

This week I'm delighted to announce a new producer, Natasha Hodge. If you haven't yet seen her at market come in and say hello, I'm sure she'll be pleased to see you. As you know, Natasha owned the village stores for many years and made delicious cakes for her cafe and it's good to know that we can still sample her delicious goodies, including macaroons, chocolate brownies, fruit scones and lemon meringue shortbread.

Hello,

I can't believe it's almost four weeks since I last sent out the last newsletter, so much has happened, Easter, Easter holidays, Back to school, Royal Wedding, Bank Holidays like they're going out of fashion, and still no rain.

The last couples of weeks have seen a new 'spot' at market. Pick 'n' mix, have you been to see it? Lots of individual cakes for you to buy, it's a great success.

Juliana has also returned with all her wonderful flowers all very reasonably priced. If you have a space in your border, I'm sure Juliana will have a plant suitable for it.

Fran has started making Honey and Sea Salt Caramels alongside her Honey Truffles. Those who have bought her truffles will know how delicious they are, so the caramels are sure to be a big hit too.

As well as all your favourite savouries and cakes, we will be tempting you with ....

Butley Daffodil Woods will be open Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Go and take a stroll in the beautiful woods, the daffodils were reputedly planted by the monks centuries ago for medicinal purposes. Butley is one of the few daffodil woods in the country. Small admission charge for adults, children free and all proceeds going to the Marie Curie Cancer Care Fund.

Do you listen to Mark Murphy's Breakfast Show on Radio Suffolk? This week he's been championing Suffolk Rusks. If you've never tried them, they are really delicious with a cup of tea, and some people like to eat them with a slice of cheese on top. There will be Suffolk Rusks at market this week, so come and try them, see what you think.

This week we are fortunate to be holding Orford Country Market on Saturday in St. Bartholomew's Church in Orford for the last market before Christmas. Not only is the church a wonderful space to present all the lovely Home Made ~ Home Grown ~ Hand Crafted products that our producers will be offering for sale this weekend but it also provides an opportunity to reflect on the story of Christmas stunningly displayed in the glass in the east window. Attributed to the firm of Clayton and Bell the Virgin and Child will be looking down on the happy faces of people enjoying mince pies and mulled wine from Maria and the sound of festive hand bells from the Leiston Bellringers. We will also have a background of Christmas Carols to get you all into the spirit of the season.

Remember that you still have time to order produce for collection from Orford Town Hall on Thursday 23rd December but do join us at the last Saturday market this year when the goodies will include:

Hello everyone Santa here

Jenny has stacks and stacks of pre Christmas things to do so I have volunteered to edit the blog this week. I hope that you have all been good girls and boys buying lots and lots of the lovely goodies at the Orford Country Market. My elves have been saved bags of time and effort this year by sourcing loads of their presents from the market in the Town Hall.

Just two more Saturdays to enjoy before the market breaks for Christmas so make sure that you order anything special for collection from the Town Hall on Thursday December 23rd. This week the market is in the Town Hall as usual but next week they are all looking forward to the short trip across the road to St. Bartholomew's Church which is a wonderful venue for the market and they hope to provide some jolly pre-Christmas cheer for everyone with a return appearance by the Leiston HandBell Ringers who entertained so well at the market last year.

At the market this Saturday the goodies will include:

Meat: Fresh dressed Turkey, Sausages, Bacon, Gammon and probably some Goat for the more adventurous. (Rudolph and the team vetoed the venison this week)

Savouries: Beef Lasagnes ~ Cottage Pies ~ Quiches ~ Scotch Eggs ~ Game Pies ~ Pork Pies ~ Cheese and Olive Scones ~ Warming Carrot Soup (I hope there will be some carrots left for my reindeer on Christmas Night as Rudolph is very partial to David's Chantenay)

Locally produced delicious Honey Chocolate Truffles (These would be perfect with the sherry (Oloroso preferably) by the fireplace on Christmas Night)

Vegetables: Whatever David has managed to dig, cut, pull, pick or prise from his abundant smallholding.

Next year Orford Country Market is hoping for some exciting times with the Country Market organisation looking at raising the profile and improving the image of all Country Markets nationwide. There has already been a lot of work identifying what market customers would like to see on offer and also some early work on re-badging the corporate image and promoting indirect sales through retail outlets.

Orford Country Market may volunteer to act as a pilot for this relaunch so if you have any thoughts about how they could improve their service or product range please let them know. Either through the website or over a cup of something at the market.

We have very exciting news this week for all chocolate lovers. We have a new producer, Fran, who makes delicious honey chocolate truffles. Take a look below.

Roger is in charge of refreshments this week. Now Roger doesn't normally cook for the market and this is National Baking Week, so in association with the children of Orford School, there will be cookies made by them on the refreshment stand. The children cook in a purpose built teaching kitchen, and are taught to cook 'proper' meals that they then eat for lunch. The children really enjoy it and they love to show their skills to their parents.

This weeks recipe from the vegetable table is Winter Squash with Cardamon.

Top tip when keeping our gorgeous celery fresh; either stand the whole plant in an inch or two of water or cut off the leaves and place the stems in a bag in the fridge. Remember the leaves may be a little bitter but add an interesting depth to soups and stews and also to winter salads. Use a potatoe peeler to strip away the fibrous outer strings.

Food within 30 miles can be easily achieved in a village like Orford. Staples at the village store, anything fishy or smoked from Richardson's, Pinney's or Brinkley's Fish Shed, as well as all the local, fresh produce from Orford Country Market. This weeks recipe is for using round courgettes ~ 'Courgette Wedges with Anchovy Mayonnaise'.

Summer squash tastes good sliced and fried. Courgettes are best eaten raw or dry fried to combat the soft texture. They lighten up a plate sliced thinnly with a potatoe peeler and sprinkled with lemon zest. The combination of both green and yellow looks lovely.

Our french bean colours are also very seasonal now with the mix of pale yellow, mottled green and deep purple. Unfortunately the purple will turn green on cooking unless you fry or steam with the lid off the pan. If you are preparing a bean salad, plunging into cold water as soon as al dente will help. They look glorious on a bed of spinach and sprinkled with an oil based dressing !!

At Orford Flower show last weekend, Ali, one of our talented cooks, won the Best Cookery Exhibit for her gingerbread and she has been busy making more for market tomorrow, so get there early or it will be gone. In fact, I lost count of how many prizes Ali won for her cooking, she must have had a prize in each category. Well done Ali, also to Roger and Pat who both won prizes at the Flower Show.

This week our recipe No 3 is 'Betroot and walnut dip'. These recipes are proving very popular.

Winter squash are now arriving as are french beans.

This is a really interesting time of year for veg. We still have a flavour of summer with the last weeks of tomatoes and salad potatoes, but meanwhile the first sense of colder weather is in the air as winter squash begin to ripen, bigger whiter potatoes start to be dug out of the ground and beetroot and chard are swelling.

David and Marlene are often asked about the differences between summer and winter squash ~ here's their answer:

Summer squash are surprisingly easy to cook. Either boiled in a little water or baked whole in the oven for just twenty minutes, they are firm in texture with a creamy flavour. I even slice mine and fry for a few minutes as part of a cooked breakfast. They hold their shape well. If they are bought as larger squash, the skin will be tough and seeds will have formed in the centre. They are then a welcome addition to the tin of roasted veg and can be prepared into chunks before cooking with seeds removed.
Meanwhile, now we are later in the season, the grander winter squash start to appear. These take longer roasting and usually the seeds and skin are removed before cooking. The more unusual shapes are roasted whole or halved. This group have a different texture to the summer varieties. They are of more substance with a distinct range of flavours and varied sweetness.
Winter squash store for months, looks beautiful around the kitchen and can be used in dozens of recipes. From soup to curry to salads to pie they marry well with strong spices and flavours. Coriander, rocket and cumin to name a few.

Hello,

Here I am, Friday evening, England are out of the cup and Andy Murray is now Scottish instead of British. Andy Murray put in a good performance but was up against one of the best. On the bright side, how about all this lovely weather we've been having? Our first BBQ this evening, hopefully many more to come, and I'll finish the evening with a drink outside. But then again, I am English so my next thought is 'we badly need some rain'.

In a couple of weeks time it is Jazz at the Pavillion. We are offering a hamper service for this event, so come along to market, choose what you would like and we will deliver it to The Pavillion on Jazz day (please see the poster at the end of this post).

Well goodness knows how, but England have made it through the group stage of the World Cup. It's a shame we can't rely on their form being consistent, at least when you come to market you know that our food and produce is consistent .....

freshly picked seasonal vegetables and fruit (picked Saturday mornings)
freshly prepared savouries (made within 24 hours and kept chilled until market, and kept on cold trays in market to keep them fresh)
freshly prepared cakes, breads and pastries, none of which have been frozen previously, which of course means if you only fancy half a cake, you can freeze the other half for later
jams, chutneys, marmalades, pickles ... all using fresh fruit or vegetables

All our cooks hold the Food Hygiene certificate, and all our cooks use free-range eggs from their own chickens. All our packaging is food standard to ensure that the food is in the freshest possible condition when it's sold. And it's local, our furthest producer lives in Iken, which is only 5 miles away, so you know that when we say it's local we mean it's local!

We are back in the Town Hall this week and look forward to seeing you all. Not sure if we are in the main hall or the small hall at the back but we will make it obvious where we are.

All your usual favourites will be there including bread from Chris and lots and lots of cakes and savouries but come early as things do run out. BTW if you let us know in advance we can put things aside for you or you can place an order with any of the country market members.

Tracy will be there with her lovely wool and there will be heaps of lovely hand knitted items. Look out also for other handmade items cushions, bags etc. Marie's photographs are beautiful and a popular choice with locals and visitors alike. Again if you want something in a different size etc. just ask.

After visiting the market don't forget to visit the Flower Festival and Art Show in St Bartholomew's church.

We look forward to seeing you in St. Bartholomew's Church again this week as the Town Hall Windows Restoration is not yet complete. The internal redecoration of the Town Hall looks very bright and clean but we have decided not to go back until the boarding is removed from the windows and we have natural daylight. Teresa will be making bacon and sausage rolls, just follow the smell of bacon ..........

HAPPY NEW YEAR

After a very busy and successful December we will be back in the Town Hall on Saturday with a selection of cakes, savouries, jams and preserves. Also, David will be bringing along his soup.

There will also be hand made crafts including woolly items made from the gorgeous wool of the Gedgrave Flock. Just what we need in these severe conditions.

Why not call in and see what there is on offer and stop for a while to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.

We should be up to full strength again by February and thank you all for your continuing support.

Thank you for making our final market of 2009 one of the best yet.

The raffle raised £78 in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance Service and the winners were:-

Hi Everyone

Thank you all for supporting the Country Market this year.

This week will be our last market until January 16th 2010 and we would like you to join us for our pre Christmas celebrations. We will have lots of your favourites and there will be FREE MULLED WINE AND MINCE PIES to help get the Christmas week off to a good start.

There are still raffle tickets available for the draw in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance Service and the draw will take place at 12 noon on Saturday. Prizes are a selection of Country Market products including a hamper, so good luck!

We will have our usual beef lasagnes, quiches and much much more, soup, cakes, preserves, pickles and savouries and of course locally grown, freshly picked vegetables.

There will also be savoury nibbles to enjoy over the weekend or to have ready in the freezer when that expected or unexpected guest drops in for a festive drink.

Christmas goodies from the Crown at Snape will include chipolatas, bacon and sausage meat.

There will be hand made wreaths, and of course lovely Christmas cakes, mincemeat, mince pies and Christmas puddings

Soups will include Leek and Potato, Broccoli and Stilton, Roasted Butternut Squash, and Carrot.

Last minute or stocking gifts include fudge, coconut ice and other treats from the cake counter and, from the craft table, small zipped purses, scarves, knits, wool and accessories, jewellery, teacup candles, lavender bags and cushions.

Remember that all our food is freshly cooked so can be frozen. Why not pick up some soup or savouries for the days following Christmas when you have either had enough of the leftovers or want something quick and easy.

Likewise from the baker why not buy an extra loaf for the freezer or maybe some festive buns.

2009 has been a good year for the Orford Country Market and we all thank you all for your continuing support throughout the year.

We wish you a Merry and Peaceful Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year and we look forward to seeing you all again in 2010.

Our fresh soups have been a great success and this week we will have Leek and Potato, Pumpkin, Roasted Butternut Squash and Carrot. Where possible we use locally grown produce in the soups and as they are freshly made can be frozen.

Sadly all the honey has gone for this year but there is always lots of jams, marmalades, pickles and chutneys.

WOOL

This is the week for the wool from the Gedgrave flock to be at the market, so come along and see what new things Tracy and Marilyn have been knitting. I understand that the lace weight wool has arrived and they will be brining some along tomorrow. Always lots to see.

We have some new jewellery on sale. I haven't seen it yet so can't comment but I look forward to meeting another new member to the market.

CHRISTMAS

I know it is early but we have mincemeat and puddings for sale. They keep for many months so why not get them now so that is one less thing to worry about. We have large, medium and small puddings and jars of mincemeat. WARNING, once you try the homemade variety you will never buy commercially produced mincemeat ever again. We use the finest ingredients and we take great care in the production.

CRAFTS

We have a wide range of hand made items. Knitted scarves, mittens, bags etc. Patchwork quilts, cushion, and lovely small zipped bags. There will be a couple of tote bags as well as lavender bags and wheatbags. Dare I say, some lovely things for Christmas presents.

REFRESHMENTS.

Why not stop for a tea or coffee and enjoy the atmosphere of the market. It the weather doesn't improve it will be a good place to shelter for a while.

and don't forget, we are taking orders for Christmas food and gifts. Why not order hampers for all your friends, family or staff. We will fill them with items of your choice.
